What is a
Trauma Program?

Trauma is a nervous system response, not a character flaw. The brain and body adapt to survive, and for many people, the coping mechanisms that once kept them safe eventually become the source of their distress.

Viva Rehab’s Trauma Program is a dedicated clinical pathway for clients who need to go deeper than our standard 4-week program to achieve lasting recovery. It is not an add-on. It is a structured, multi-modality program led by clinicians who are specifically trained in trauma-focused approaches, delivered within the same phased treatment framework that guides all care at Viva.

The program draws on a range of evidence-based therapies, including EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, Narrative Therapy, Exposure Therapy, and somatic techniques. Your therapist selects and adapts these based on your individual needs, your history, and your readiness. There is no fixed sequence or one-size-fits-all protocol.

The Trauma Program requires a minimum 8-week residential stay. Many clients choose to stay for 12 weeks for the full integration and relapse prevention phase.

What the Program Involves

The Trauma Program uses multiple therapeutic approaches that work together. Your therapist builds your treatment plan around what you need, not around a fixed list of sessions.

Individual Therapeutic Work

Trauma-Focused CBT

Identifies and reframes the negative core beliefs that develop after difficult experiences. Helps you see how the past has shaped your thinking and gives you tools to change it.

Narrative Therapy

Helps you reshape the story you tell about yourself. Separates your identity from your condition and builds a stronger sense of control over your recovery.

EMDR

Uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge.

Exposure Therapy

Gradually and safely works through situations, thoughts, or memories you have been avoiding. Over time, triggers lose their grip and confidence in your own coping grows.

Group Therapeutic Work

Psychoeducation Groups

Build understanding of how trauma affects the brain and body, providing insights and strategies you can apply in your daily recovery.

Process Groups

Facilitated sessions that create space to practice expressing difficult feelings in a supported setting and build connection with others at a similar stage.

Family Therapy

Where appropriate and with your consent, helps repair relationships affected by your condition and helps your family understand how to support your recovery.

Body-Based and Somatic Work

TRE (Trauma Release Exercises)

Gentle exercises that help the body release deep muscular patterns of stress and tension.

Polyvagal-Informed Breathwork

Controlled breathing techniques that work with your nervous system to reduce anxiety and restore emotional stability.

Yoga and Meditation

Scientifically proven to reduce stress hormones, improve mental clarity, and support overall wellbeing.

Bodywork

Physical therapies that help release tension held in the body and support nervous system regulation between sessions.

Who Is This Program For

This program may be right for you if:

You do not need to arrive knowing you need trauma treatment. Many clients come for our standard program and, during the stabilization phase, discover with their clinician that unresolved experiences have been underlying their symptoms. Extending your stay is a natural next step, and your clinical team will recommend it if they believe it is right for you.

Why We Do Not Rush This Work

After prolonged or overwhelming stress, the nervous system stays on high alert. You might feel constantly on edge, struggle to sleep, react strongly to things that seem minor, or feel emotionally numb. These are not personal failings. They are signs that your brain is still in survival mode.

Going straight into deep therapeutic work before you are ready can make things worse, not better. It can increase emotional intensity, heighten anxiety, trigger cravings, and raise the risk of relapse. The research is clear: gradual, paced treatment produces better outcomes.

That is why our Trauma Program is built on a foundation-first approach. You complete the stabilization and coping skills phases of Viva’s treatment framework before any deeper work begins. By the time you start, you already have the emotional tools, clinical relationships, and support in place to handle what comes up. Your therapist will only move forward when you are genuinely ready.

Why This Program Is Residential

Trauma-focused therapies work by bringing difficult memories and emotions to the surface. That is the point. But it also means that between sessions you may feel unsettled or emotionally activated.

In outpatient treatment, you process a difficult session and then go back to the same environment and the same triggers. For many people, this creates an avoidance cycle: the discomfort pushes them to pull back, and the brain never gets the chance to update its sense of safety.

At Viva, your therapist monitors your progress daily and adjusts the pace in real time. You have somatic therapies available to help regulate your nervous system between sessions. And you are physically removed from the people, places, and situations that have been reinforcing your distress. If you need more time in stabilization, or if things are moving faster than expected, the program adapts to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Trauma Program?

The program requires a minimum 8-week stay. The first four weeks focus on stabilization and building coping skills. The remaining weeks focus on deeper therapeutic work. Many clients stay for 12 weeks to complete the full integration and relapse prevention phase.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the therapies used in the program. It uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess distressing memories. It is not a talk therapy.

No. The program is for anyone whose recovery would benefit from trauma-focused treatment. This includes people with adverse childhood experiences, emotional abuse, neglect, or prolonged stress that may not meet a formal PTSD diagnosis.

Your therapist will only begin deeper therapeutic work when you are clinically stable. If at any point you need to return to stabilization, the program adjusts. You are never pushed faster than you are ready to go.

No. The program uses multiple evidence-based approaches including trauma-focused CBT, Narrative Therapy, Exposure Therapy, somatic therapies, and group work. Your treatment plan is built around your individual needs, not a fixed protocol.

The Trauma Program builds on the stabilization and coping skills work from Phases 1 and 2 of Viva’s treatment framework. You do not skip ahead. Deeper work begins only after that foundation is in place, which is why the minimum stay is 8 weeks.
