Dr. Panu Khuwuthyakorn is among Thailand's foremost psychiatrists in addiction medicine and medically supervised detox, with a medical career spanning more than two decades. He is the Director of Nakhon Sawan Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital and serves as consultant psychiatrist at Viva Rehab Thailand and at our sister center, The Dawn Wellness Centre and Rehab, both part of The Dawn Group.

At Viva Rehab, Dr. Panu also acts as our medical reviewer: clinical and treatment content is checked against sound medical understanding and current practice before we publish it, so the people reading it — often while deciding about their own care — can rely on what it says.

Qualifications and Certifications

A graduate of Chiang Mai University, Dr. Panu has held a Thai medical license since 1999. His qualifications include:

  • Board certification from the Medical Council of Thailand in psychiatry, in family medicine, and in preventive medicine with a community mental health focus
  • Certification in Addiction Medicine, which lets him assess the physical and the psychological sides of substance use as one connected problem rather than two separate problems
  • Early clinical years at Thailand's National Psychiatric Institute, concentrating on mental health and addiction medicine

That combined grounding — psychiatry on one side, addiction medicine on the other — is the foundation of how we treat dual diagnosis at Viva Rehab: addiction and mental health conditions approached as connected, never in isolation.

Clinical Experience

Over more than twenty years in medicine, Dr. Panu has:

  • Held senior positions across Thailand's mental health, addiction, and harm reduction services
  • Overseen medication management and medically supervised detox, including methadone detox
  • Treated hundreds of clients living with co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions, alongside direct clinical work in trauma-related disorders, depression, and anxiety

He has additionally completed a clinical observership at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada, covering its mood and anxiety, psychological trauma, addiction, and general psychiatry programs.
