The Bridge Between
Treatment and Independence

The Step-Down Program at Viva Rehab is designed for clients who have completed residential treatment and want a supported, gradual transition back to independent daily life before returning home.

How the Step-Down Program Works

Completing residential treatment is a major achievement, but the shift from a fully structured clinical environment to independent living can feel abrupt. Many clients find that having a transitional period, where they can practice their new skills in a real-world setting while still receiving clinical support, makes a significant difference to their long-term outcomes.

Viva Rehab’s Step-Down Program bridges that gap. Based in Chiang Mai, it gives you the opportunity to gradually reintroduce the responsibilities and routines of everyday life while your clinical team remains within reach.

STEP 1

Assessment and Transition Planning

Toward the end of your residential program, your therapist evaluates whether the Step-Down program is a good fit for your recovery goals.

Together, you develop a transition plan that identifies the specific skills and situations you want to practice in a less structured setting, along with any areas that may still need clinical attention.

STEP 2

Supported Independent Living

During this phase, you remain based at Viva Rehab while gradually reintroducing the responsibilities and routines of independent life. Each day includes scheduled sessions at the facility alongside structured off-site windows, giving you the freedom to practice daily routines, manage your time, and navigate real-world situations while your clinical team remains close.

The environment in Chiang Mai, far removed from the triggers in your home country, provides a safer space to build confidence before returning home.

STEP 3

Practical Application of Recovery Skills

The focus of the step-down phase is on applying what you learned during residential treatment to real life.

This includes managing your own schedule, making independent decisions about your wellbeing, and recognizing and responding to triggers without the round-the-clock structure of inpatient care. Your therapist works with you to review how you are coping and adjust your plan as needed.

STEP 4

Preparing for Return Home

Before you leave Chiang Mai, your clinical team works with you to finalize your discharge and aftercare plan.

This includes connecting you with Viva Rehab’s free lifetime aftercare program, identifying local support resources in your home country, and ensuring you have a clear plan for maintaining your progress once you are fully independent.

How to Transition to Sober Living
in Thailand After Treatment

One of the key advantages of completing both residential treatment and the step-down program at Viva Rehab is that the entire process takes place in Thailand, away from the people, places, and situations that contributed to your condition. Rather than returning home immediately after an intensive treatment experience, the step-down program allows you to ease back into independence in a calm, supportive environment.

Chiang Mai offers a lower cost of living than most Western cities, a welcoming expatriate community, and a pace of life that supports recovery. Clients in the step-down program have the freedom to explore the city, establish healthy routines, and build confidence in their ability to manage daily life, all while knowing their clinical team is available if they need guidance.

Who Is the Step-Down Program For

The Step-Down program is typically suited for clients who have completed at least 12 weeks of residential treatment at Viva Rehab and feel they would benefit from a gradual transition rather than an immediate return home.

It is particularly valuable for clients who are concerned about returning to a triggering home environment too soon, those who want more time to practice their coping strategies in a real-world setting, and individuals whose recovery goals include building sustainable daily routines before re-entering their usual environment.

Your clinical team will discuss whether the step-down program is appropriate for your situation as part of your treatment planning.h

“My therapist worked with me on what I was actually dealing with, and the plan changed as I changed. That mattered a lot. Chiang Mai is peaceful, and that calmness carries into the sessions. I left feeling like I had real tools, not just advice.”

“I came for mental health support, not addiction, and I was nervous about being in a rehab setting. But the team made me feel comfortable from day one. It’s been four months since I left and the aftercare calls have honestly kept me grounded.”
